View Full Version : My SB Maxx Racer!!
Here is a little project I put together guys. I started about a month ago but set it aside and just got back to it over the last 2 days. I wanted to build a SB truck to play with, and possibly race if it works well, so I had to ditch the MP chassis for this one. I installed an MP tranny into a stock Maxx chassis, used the stock MP center shafts, RPM arms and stock sliders. I also used 1/8 scale buggy tires and rims to lighten the weight for the .12 motor. This should also open up more gearing options. Check it out.
Specs:
Stock Maxx chassis modded to fit MP tranny.
OS CVX maxx .12
AE pipe
Kyosho IFW30 shocks (4)
Ofna MBX rims / tires
Lightened RPM arms w/ an extra shock mount to accomidate the 1/8 scale shocks
13t HPI clutch (to start with)
JR radio (not installed just yet)
The entire truck is built from spare parts I had around the house (including the body and paint). Total cost on this one is about $20-$25 for the HPI clutch I needed for the 1Mod clutchbell.
Total weight (w/o fuel) - 6.75 lbs
Here are the end results.

Edit: i see now but where will it go whaen you install it looks like the pipe is in the way
Thanks for reminding me! I'm going to strap the receiver to the back of the front shock tower but I keep forgetting to get it out of my Jeep so I can install it. I'll post some updated pics later on tonight.

How heavy is the MP tranny compared to Stock? And are those 'hacked' up RPM arms lighter then stock? http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/laugh.gif By the way, this is 5hift 9ear from MaxxTraxx. http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/tongue.gif Man, I can't wait 'till I get the new T.
Edit: Typos. :o

I don't think it looks bad .... I like it.. I just think you need a front and back bumper to make the body look more realistic but other than that.. looks decent to me :)

IMO, it looks better without the bumpers. It gives it the 'Baja' look, and makes the truck lighter. I'm doing that exact same setup, but stock tranny and T-Maxx 2.5 ..
I'm not sure about the weight compaired to a Maxx tranny. I don't have one any more to compair it with. Also unsure about the weight on the arms vs. stock. I just used what I had and I'm working to lose any weight I can w/o sacrificing overall strength. I still have some chassis trimming to do tomorrow and I need to shave off the extra lower shock mount on each arm. I added a little weight today with the throttle linkage and power switch so I should be at about 6.9 lbs. I'll actually weight in this weekend once the last changes (that I have come up with so far) are completed. I hope to have it down to 6.5 lbs fueled and ready but I'll have to wait and see what I come up with.
Thanks for all the feedback. Please keep it coming (good or bad).
Monster19: I didn't have bumpers for the truck. Either way my main concern is function which in my mind (for this project at least) is light, light, light. On that note, I could also cut the ends off the skids but that would really look funny. :p Thanks.

You could cut the front bumper in half, round off the corners and cut 1/3 of the rear bumper .. The owner of our LHS cut front and rear skids completely off, running cut up RC10GT Carbon fiber shock towers, cut one side of the chassis off, and finally is running 4 Losi Rally Weapon shocks. Made for oval though ..

How does that .12 cv-x work on the t with the stock tranny and everything? Did it have good power?
Jethro: I never really had a stock Maxx. I actually had this on a Nitro MT Racer that I sold as a roller about a year ago so now I found a new use for it. I'll see about how this thing runs soon enough and if its pretty good then I'm going to buy the new TRX 2.5 to drop in.
Here is my final (for now) configuration! I did some very minor chassis trimming ;) and removed the extra lower shock mount on each arm. I also cut the last needed holes in the body for the fuel tank access and for the glow starter. Here are some pics of the changes I made. I'll try to weigh the truck tomorrow and hopefully I'll get to run it too :D
I'll report once I get it weighed in and running. Thanks for checking it out.
sorry the pics are a little dark. I was in a hurry.

Looks good. I like it!
On my T-Maxx I positioned the fuel tank where the throttle servo is on the stock T, mounting the throttle/brake servo where the fuel tank was. I also installed a Trinity radio box right behind the throttle/brake servo. The stock battery box is where it always was. No real attempt at lightening it, though. Please let us know how durable the lightened RPM arms are!

Hey man I am really interested in how you got the mp tranny in there like what you cut away and how it goes together. Did you use the mp gearboxes for it to. Cant wait to see how it goes, can you tell me how much the mp tranny cost? Thanks and keep us informed! :D
Ok, the first run was not too impressive I must say. The gearing was too tall for the .12 to spin well and it bogged for about 15-20' on starts. Top end was OK but still a little lacking. I'll make a quick note on the motor I used first. It was sitting in my garage for 1 year with the filter and pipe still installed and I just dropped it in and cranked it up (no prep work) and it cranked on about the 6th pull. Its only 1/2 hp motor so I wasn't expecting much out of it. My first thought after the test run was to go ahead and install a BB (it will fit very easily with this tranny) but I really want to put this truck in the SB class. On that note, here is phase 2!!
I first desided to go for a power upgrade. I picked up a used .15 (the one from the Losi RTRs) from the LHS for a couple bucks. He said the motor would be a good bit stronger than my cv-x (close to 1hp) so that was a good start for me. Second, I bought an HPI 11/14t 2spd bell and the extra clutch nut and bearings I needed to install that on my new motor. I desided to go ahead and install my MP 2spd (still picking up parts from around the house ;) ). After a bit more dremel work and fitting, and moving a few other small parts I got it all installed and spinning smoothly. Here is the installed tranny and the new motor. This should give the extra punch I needed from the line and the top end I wanted.
