Hi
I got my TC a couple of days back. Because of a busy schedule and multiple warnings from people I know about a good break-in, I hadn't really touched it until today other than just looking at it and being in AWE of it's huge size.
Anyway, tonight when I got off from work I came home and took it out into the shop to fire it up. First off...other than the fact that the directions are in about 50 trillion languages (uh, I only read ONE), the books were helpful and the pictures were good. I mainly took a look tonight because I thought I would need to make a battery run-I happened to find a stash of Energizers I got on sale a few months back...I forgot all about them!
I got the truck all put together and got to try out the starting system. Having had a Nitro Rustler (which was an aweful pain in the arse with that system Traxxas uses) I was dreading it's first start. Two pushes of the the primer, a touch of the starter and the truck came to life. No drama-no cursing...it just started and ran well!!!!
Taking heed of the many warnings I've gotten, the truck basically idled it's way through an entire tank of gas. The directions say you should run it at 1/2 throttle...but I did barely more than idle. I ran about a 1/2 tank through it driving it very slowly down the street...but at no more than about 1/4 throttle I would guess.
My point to all of this (and no offense to those who own a Traxxas truck)- the quality of this truck is SOOOO apparent compared to the others I've had. Everything feels right...it's well put together and most of all-IT STARTED AND RAN!!!!
In addition to the NR I also had an Evader ST electric and this truck is by FAR the best put together of the group.
Anyway, I'm done raving but I wanted to thank those of you who steered me into the TC. I'll find out more after I run a few more tanks through it what I think of the performance, but I think it will be just fine for me for right now.
THANKS!

Glad to here that everything is going well and you like the TC. Keep an eye on the trans for slipping and you might have to re-adjust your linkages once everything is broken in. If you have any questions on the linkage adjust there is a video on terracrusher.net.

Okay...overall I'm still happy with the truck. However, today I took it out and actually ran it (after basically two tanks run through at idle). The truck doesn't shift to 2nd gear. Upon reading the tuning manual, I found that there is an adjustment screw to set the shift point. Ooppps, I'm at the park without a 1.5mm hex wrench.
I drive home, get the wrench, remove the little cover to find that the adjustment screw has completely fallen out of the hole it's supposed to be in.
Now I have to: a. return it and swap for another, b. disassemble what appears to be the entire transmission to fish for the screw, or c: sit here and be mad about it.
The truck runs great and overall I like it...but this kind of thing is irritating when you drop close to $400 for a toy :(
I suppose later today I'll fish out the darned screw...
Thanks for the help. I'm already thinking the clutch isn't properly adjusted...I have to go nearly full throttle just to climb minor obstacles.

"I have to go nearly full throttle just to climb minor obstacles."
? What happens if you just drive it slow against a minor obstacle (sidewalk, etc)? do the wheels spin or does it just stand there humming?
Sounds like yer driving it too rich if it just stand there humming.(but I don't know much bout cars.)

First the screw you are reffering as missing i im almsot positive that its there.....To ajust it you need some kind of flash light cause it hard to find.....I have never heard of that screw missing before..... If you look on your exploded view drawing that came with the TC on the bottom right corner the screw is MM1...You just don't pop the rubber grommet and the screw is there that is non sense.....YOu have to find the hole in the clutch bell(MM5) by turning the brake shoes while looking thru the hole.....then once you have the hole in place you have to turn the engine spur gear or engine clutch bell and then you will see the screw go pass by the hole....It is very hard to reach at.....OUt of 20 try you might just get it once.......
BUt i would not attempt to adjut this as your truck is still new ANd takes time before it get broken in.....after 10 tanks or so it should start shifting into second gerra no problem....I think its too early to jump on conclusion yet..........

I appreciate your input...following the instructions that came with the truck, I did exactly what you said. I found the hole...and saw the screw. The screw, however, isn't actually attached to anything. I touched it with the hex wrench (using my worklight to see it's tiny rear) and it fell. I know the screw is there, I know it's not in the hole it's supposed to be.
Anyway, I messed around with it a bit more. I don't really want to split the tranny apart on a 4 day old truck, but I did take it out of the truck and look some more-exactly what I described above.
I put the whole thing back together and ran it some more. It is now shifting, no doubt as a result of further break in. Apparently the screw being out of it's home isn't going to stop it from shifting, and according to the instructions the further 'out' the screw is the lower the shift point, which is what I would wish for anyway.
So, the truck is now shifting, but the screw isn't where it's supposed to be. I'm inclinded not to worry about it as long as it performs acceptably.

The screw has not fallen out ! It has a spring underneath it so it does move around a little. Follow the directions when adjusting the shift point, it is very sensitive, no more than 1/12th increments. And you are supposed to break the trans in slowly, even better is in grass on flat ground it adds a little more resistance.

DON"T touch the shiftpoint adjustment screw that thing can cause ALOT!!!!!!!! of trouble..
The TC has trouble shifting in the beginning.. all you have to do is drive it on grass for a tank or so....mine was the same and after i drove it on a soccer field it shifted... and after a few tanks it got much better.. it takes time to brake it in.. you need ALOT of patience to brake it in..
Its and Awesome truck..
Mine hasn't given me much trouble unless i asked for it and messed with things that i shouldn't have..

hey guys,
thinking of getting a tc but from what i read in forums and mags(rcnitro) i get the felling that the engine is not strong enough!is this true?i dont want some out-of-control thing just something that has enough speed and torque to go mudding, jumping and climbing.
thanks

Crono
It has enough power to drive around.. its excelent for jumping and crawling just on a straight line its not that fast... cause its so damn big.... I dont know why Tamiya bothered to make such a huge damn truck but they put a .18 in it.. Anyways I love the truck.. its fast enough for me.. it goes a little over 30mph
It was worth it for me.. I'll put a bigger engine later when this one is done which will be a long time cause this thing is a durable tank.
Consider it.. people tend to make it sound slower than it is.. i love the truck its good on the things you said you wanted to do with it.
