View Full Version : Pica P-51 Mustang -- Snap together Technology
Wow!! This plane is as easy, as 1,2,3.. It's also as easy, as putting a Switchback together. Pica's laser cut parts are precisely cut and labeled in a neat way, that can be easily identified. This kit is 100% hassle free and no worries.
I just started this kit a few minutes ago. Working on four planes at one time, modifying my Cub with ailerons, and installing servos to my DAW Extra 300 (finally after 4 months:D ) and finalizing my Ace Simple AT-6 series for her 22nd flight:)
The Kit --- You guys will get a kick out of this.. wickedly fun to put together:)
P.S-------Quick question, are there any online source, where I can ideas, that you know of, that has galleries of mustangs in racing color scheme?
Can you smell the CA and balsa? I love it:D
Here is a pic of the Elev. fin and well as the stab. This got my attention, as I was just trying it out, the parts just want's to connect by itself. Piece by piece in it's corresponding slot and place, no loose corners, no uneven cut or lines.. simply, simplified kit. I can't say more, or less about this kit. Perfect :)
This is part 3 from the construction Manual, as soon, as I got this part built. I was hooked:) Motor mount looks sweet. Candidate for Mega 16 series
I think at his rate for building speed, or parts fitting together like this, I'll have this plane flying by next week:)
few more shoot of the front:) I love it:D
WOW!! this is going to be a birdy shoot:)

Hi 2NG,
Nice work... I never built a laser cut kit but it seems that all pieces fit perfectly...

FLB,
Thanks for the links, I had a blast looking through each one. FLB, what do you think about black and white color scheme on P-51's?
2NG,
Could be nice and then this P-51 will be part of your planes family. Don't you have a Black & white or black and Silver Tiger Moth?
FLB
***Don't you have a Black & white or black and Silver Tiger Moth? ***
I have a Silver and black TM, and Silver and Black Reno Racer:) Oakland RADIERS:D
This Mustang is going to be Black and yellow.. Kinda like Herr's Mustang:)
FLB, here's my progress:)
This plane still give me a good fun feeling inside, same cut as Herr on it's product. I have built Herr kits before, but this kit surpasses Herr's ingenuity, as Pica really know how to link and fit each parts together:)
Fun part:)

Looking good 2NG,
I see your back at it again! Our weather has been so nice that I have been doing all flying and no building, but the rains are right around the corner so the building will not be too far away.
Dale
***Our weather has been so nice that I have been doing all flying and no building***
I forgot to charge my radio last night:( The weather is nice indeed:) ... Instead of me getting upset, I started to build this plane, cover looks good, and I slowly getting into war birds.. (I am ready for the long building season. ssshh.. I have 15 kits..;) and a JellyBean Dave Blum's design)
Dale, I can't wait to build side to side with you during this building season:) ... Thank you for the kind words...:)

Hey 2ng and everybody
AHhhhh you got yet another plane,Im sooo jealous;) Looking good 2NG you should have it flying by tommorrow at the rate your going :D
Happy Building
:) MIKE
Hi 2NG,
It seems to go very quickly...
I think that black and yellow will be a better combination, less austere for me than Black and White (personnal feeling). And those racing planes are most of the time with bright colors. I remenber a nice one some years ago all yellow with "Rockwell" in big black letters on both sides of the fuselage, etc... But I didn't found a picture. :(
And here is THE link to P-51 galleries especially Mark Kallio's one :D :

Just for the fun, you can see my last scale plane. It's not RC now maybe in the future? It's on Ghmbo's Curtiss Junior Motor thread because it's an answer to him and his "valorous" effort to realize the integration of a small GWS motor in a very nice scale motor replica. ;)

Thanks a mil. for the pics. made me wanna get another Mustang:) but I will hold back this will be my last kit this time:) I really enjoy all the pics.

LOL!!! Yup! another one:) actually, I think, I'm going to slow the construction down. I'm in the phase of sanding the DAW Extra 300:) . I just put sparkels last night, glassed the Stabs and hopefully do some more sanding to day to get it rounded into an Extra look...
Well, guys I'm off to the field.... Happpppy landingsss to all:)
I did not spent lot's of time with it today, but I manage to get things to how it is right now:) ....
By just looking at this boney Mustang, I can feel it's flight. I can feel that mega power:)
"Then it sounds like the Mega 16/15 BL motors will be a perfect setup for you. Warning: Once you go Brushless, you won't wana ever go back.
" By azflyer
That I can't wait:) The thrill, the excitement, the rush... (OHHHHH!!! I am anxiously hurrying, but will take my time) .. The fun:cool:
I left the Mustang with elmers glue for extra security in flight, lighter too:) I'm using white glue through out the joints and interlocking parts, not a lot, just enough to sip through and do it's job:)
Up date: My Baby WANNA FLY
Guys.. I am happy as Hell right now.. I just got the A okay!! on the Mega motor... WOOOOOhhhhhoooooooo!!!

Hi 2NG,
Your getting me excited and I won't even get to see it fly! I did manage to do a little building last night.
Hey man, we have got to do something about the date on that camera. It's messing with my mind.
Later
Dale
oooopps... Date stamp is wrong:) Thanks Dale.
***Your getting me excited and I won't even get to see it fly! ***
Ohh! you will, I'm planning to talk to one of the OHS to show my video, once I get it airborne:)
***I did manage to do a little building last night. ***
Hummmmmmm!!!! Wondering of what it could be, OOOHHH! come on MAN! tell us:D share, share, share remember.
Dale, I can't tell you how much I love this plane. I loved all other kits in the past, but this plane is something else. Pica calls it Locking tech. I just call it snap tech. You gotta get one man..
My next plane will be Dave Blum's design. The JellyBean.. I finally saw it's flight today. Man!! it is out of this world, Dave really did it this time, the JellyBean pattern plane is fast, running Mega 16x15x5.
I am going crazy here... After this and the JellyBean project. No more ARF's nor kits. Saving for brushless motors:)
I know you got tricks up your sleves, man.. Time for aerobatics Dale:)
Here's my color scheme. It's kinda like the Herr Mustang, but my primary color is black, instead of yellow. Still, I am undecided.. Need help:( I wanna use black and yellow, any thought guys?
Here's anohter scheme (thanks Roger:) )

Well, that is going to look wicked with that color scheme. I am building a MM Cessna 180 that I received as a gift. I will post it when I get a little further along. After that I'm going to scratch up an aileron ship.
Keep up the good work!
Dale
Hi 2NG,
Nice to see your updates. Your first color scheme is very interesting. Your P-51 will be like a "virulent hornet"... :p Ideal for a racing plane.
I will keep an eye on your progression;)

Hey 2NG
I see You found something useful to use a bottle of accelerator for:D
Im liking the second color scheme you got drawn up,looks good and sporty. The first one playin tricks on my eyes lol.Keep up the good work and remeber take your time;) you makin me look bad over here....
Hey did you get the JellyBean plans yet?
Happy Building
MIKE
***I see You found something useful to use a bottle of accelerator for ***
All builders have have one;) I use it for quicker results. Thin CA for temporary gluing and followed with Elmers glue for stronger bond, I find it to be lighter as well, as strong.
I first tried Elmer's on my Herr Piper J-3 Cub 1/2A man! it's strong:D
***you makin me look bad over here.... ***
Man, your not done with the Cessna 180? Come on Mike:) Rodger is almost flying his modified Cub..
***Hey did you get the JellyBean plans yet? ***
Plans/ Wood are already, but wouldn't be anytime soon. There are two Fun Fly event here in N. Ca... My friends and I are going and will be bringing our Mustangs:) . Actually I'm the only one in the group without a balsa P-51 Mustang..
This Mustang with run on Mega 16 series x5, thanks to Sal at NES, cool fella.. Took my order over the phone. First time buyer at his Shop he gave me free shipping.. (I like him)
Mega came out to $140. Can out run Astro 020, plus cheaper than 020, and last about the same.
FLB,
***Nice to see your updates. Your first color scheme is very interesting. Your P-51 will be like a "virulent hornet"... Ideal for a racing plane. ***
Your the second person that said that.. Guys I went to the field and asked the guys.. They picked the first color scheme, and solid yellow and trimed black on the bottom..
I will keep all you guys posted:)
Mike... HURRRRRRY up on that plane!!!!!
Dale,
How far are you on the Cessna?

Hey 2ng
Yes I know all builders have one,and even I have one lol ;) I just never seem to use it.Have you ever used Tight Bond before.I think I will use elmers or tight bond on my next project. Will also be ordering JellyBean plans soon Ill just build it or at least start that way by the time I am finished, I will have enough experience to fly it.
uhhhgggg sanding man I am a lil slo at this
Give us some more P 51 Pleaaaase how far have you gotten??I bet your ready to cover by now
MIKE
***Have you ever used Tight Bond before.***
Mike,
I was about to ask FLB and Dale that question:) I haven't asked Roger. I've been thinking about using it. Do you have one, have you tested, wood to wood, and wood to plastic?
Hey do an experiment and let me know, Elmers do the jod, but slow:(
LOL!!! I am covering:mad: (jk)
Happy building,
Antonio
Hi 2NG,
I've no real preferences. Most of the time, I use a "carpenter's glue": sure grip from Lepage (maybe a particular name for Canada). It's made by Henkel, I think. You spread thin coat of glue on both surfaces and clamp them. Like a contact glue. Then wait 20 to 30 minutes and it's ready. You can even do a clean up with just a soft cloth and warm water.
In fact, most of the time, I do several parts in the same evening and let dry all the night. When needed I use CA also...
Well no particular recipe;)
You can see the last result in the Curtiss Junior thread, it's a 24" Nieuport 11 :D
Regards
Frederic
***You can see the last result in the Curtiss Junior thread, it's a 24" Nieuport 11***
Get out of dodge.. REALLY? All along, I thought that that was glued with CA. WOW!! Did it affect the wieght any, or is this white glue light? This glue vs. Elmers, who's lighter?
FLB,
No doubt in this board, your and other builders here in R/C Zone. (I think, there only 4 of you guys:) ) That I rate one of the best builders..
Thanks for the tip:cool:
genovia
Hi 2NGenovia,
Don't know exactly about the weight. It's not so easy to find Elmer's white glue here. In comparaison with standard white glues, mine must be the same weight but I found that it's more effective, resistant and dry a little faster. Mixed with water, I use it also as dope to fix my silk paper. As it has a yellow-brownish color, it helps me for my "antique" finish. For my Nieuport 11, I used watercolor but for my Thomas Morse and Sopwith Camel (Scale Quizz thread) it was just a mix of water and yellow-brownish "carpenter glue".
I think that degradation in the time of this kind of glue is less important than CA. But it's just working for wood-wood collage. Otherwise I use CA which can be so convenient.
Regards
Frederic
Progress:
I had a couple trial and error with the ailerons, but I managed to get it down to my degree of perfections.
Wing & Ailerons:)
Tomorrow, I will be putting a primer to the fuselage. Hopefully Sat. I can move to doing final paint job and color trims. I wish, I have one of those Air Gun... Do you guys think standard spray paint will do? what do you guys suggest? (*sigh... Moving forward little skills:( )
For sure, there is going to be a modifications. Here's the obvious:)
Pic 1.
Per manual, battery configuration. No problem with the room that it has in the inner fuse. The problem is having to take off the wings each time I will change the batteries in the future:(
My Mod. Somehow will be at the top. I don't have a clue how to do it, but will come up with one.:) Any suggestions?
I was thinking of cutting the cockpit area, have a removable cockpit to place the battery securely on top:)
Hi 2NG,
It's just a suggestion... But "if" it was me and I wanted to do your modification, I will cut the cockpit area as you suggest but then I will pass the batteries pack through the hole of the upper balsa sheet of your fuselage to be as close as possible to the CG. The batteries pack don't need to be completely horizontal also.
In fact, I don't know if such a heavy part (batteries pack) away from the CG will not affect the "stability" of the flight. For sure trying is the best solution... It could be also a good solution for a more swinging airplane. :D
And in case of hard contact, the pack on the top will maybe do more "carnage". I think the plastic part will pop out easily :(
Regards
Frederic
Do what you want with my suggestion. Your flight experience is bigger than mine ;)

Hey 2ng
looking good..Have you come any further yet??
Sorry I dont have any Titebond but have been doing experiments with elmers wood glue,It sets in about 30 minutes and gets thick and sticky a couple seconds after parts are joined, doesnt take much effort to keep parts together while setting and curing. It is strong but it seems to me CA is much stronger..
Mike
Hello Guys,
I haven't got back to my P-51, due to NES slow, very slow shipping of the mega motor.
That's good, cause I am getting good idea's on how to do the canopy:)
I will keep you guys posted:)
Mike,
That's okay, Elemer carpenter glue works are will, slow, but good result's.
yours,
2NG:)

So what happened next?! This last post was almost 3 weeks ago.
***So what happened next?! This last post was almost 3 weeks ago.***
Sizam,
You will be the first to see it's maiden flight @ Baylands, and Rancho San Antonio;) ... I am waiting for the right color scheme, the fiber glass fuse is painted and the body is covered.
I just can't think of a color scheme idea. I have used yellow and black, as well, as black and silver, since I already started with black. I am bound to cover in yellow and silver trim combination.
LOL!! Thanks for asking, I busy building the python too.:D

How do you like their kits? Are they pretty easy to build, how about covering? I've never built or covered balsa before, do you feel that they are for more advanced builders? Did you get the landing gear on, could retracts be installed? Thanks or answering, let me know when you make it to Rancho.
***How do you like their kits? Are they pretty easy to build, how about covering? I've never built or covered balsa before***
There pretty easy, snap together. The only problem you will encounter is when your painting the fiber glass fuse. I painted mine from the inside to give it a nice clear look. Aside from that, it's a sweet little plane.
You might want to get a SB or something just to get your fingers wet. Balsa can take up a very considerable long period of time, but with two or three under your belt, you'll be a pro.:)
Have you seen little Scott fly's his E3D? hehehehe... Darn good pilot for a 13 yr. old;)
***do you feel that they are for more advanced builders? ***
Not really, but then again trick and the trade can come in handy, if you have previous encounter with gluing your fingers together.:p
***Did you get the landing gear on, could retracts be installed? ***
This particular bird did not came with an LG, but I know Kasra, have modified a plane, installing LG retracts on them.
***let me know when you make it to Rancho.***
(sigh:o *** Pressure, Pressure, Pressure) Sure:) I'll give you a heads up:cool:
