I am thinking of buying a used one...at good price since MRX3's are a bit pricey.
Good idea? Bad idea?...let me know.

HPI DC the car a while ago, but still making replacement parts for it...
Honestly, never buy a car that is DC....you never know when HPI will pull the plug off the proceed.
A used Serpent/Mugen is not that bad, talk about vector NT used can be as low as $400 with a nice 21 engine on ebay.
Of course, don't even thing about a used 950 or MRX-3 are near that cheap....

HPI's site says nothing about being discontinued. Scroll down on the kit page and they list all their discontinued kits.

But how can it be DC i still get parts for it??????
Sharkey
08-05-2003, 11:37 PM
discontinued means the car isnt sold anymore, not that they dont still make parts for it. hpi would be stupid to stop making parts for it, they have so many kits that use the same basic design.

The proceed is not a discontinued car, still very much in production as well as the parts. I have 3 of them currently, I like the car so much. The most recent one I purchased right through HPI not but 4 weeks ago.
One thing I do hate is HPI's none existant help with the car. They know nothing. You have to know someone that has one to get anywhere with the set up.

it uses a centax type clutch.

Does anyone know if Hara ever races this thing? It looks like a really nice ride. I'm surprised we don't hear more about it. HPI obviously built it to be top of the line.
ProF1TOOL
10-27-2004, 04:58 PM
It was top of the line a while back when the Vector and MRX-2 ame out. The car is outdated now and not very competitive at the top. It's best to get a Mugen if you live in the United States. They have a strong following, excellent service and good parts support.

I also want the ratio fit for high speed. does anyone know if hpi makes anything that will work with the hyper .21 8 port??

does anyone know if you can put a 3 speed on this thing, i know it would make it really fast, but it would be cool!
this has centax clutch and a 2-shoe 2-speed, I don't think any 3-speed on the market will fit. Plus it won't make it any faster, it's the tallest gear what counts
Run my Proceed for 1st time (ever) last week..awesome. Had REX sport buggy engine as left over from my 777.. it was good enough... Some pics below.. Nice car, handles well, in fact surprisingly well!! And easy to tune, the clutch, 2-speed etc. My friends K Evolva aside.

Yes, I know, but the first layer did not come out so well so I decided not to .. thanks for the tip. Yes, I don't think it is discontinued.. fine car anyway and relevantly easy for novices, too, to build and drive (comparing to top racers like Kyosho EVO)

how has the proceed treated you as far as mechanical reliability?
Ran only a couple of times last summer, but I think very well! It's an easy to car to build and maintain and works well out of the box. Centax clutch was surprisingly easy to setup and also the 2-speed worked flawlessly, pivot balls provide easy adjustement. Construction is a bit old fashion compared to newer designs but it makes the car easy to work with, straightforward not too tricky. Like Kyosho buggy, it's not the most advanced design but very competitive and easy to work with. I can recommend for mid-level drivers easily. For hardest competition this is likely not enough. Cool looking, too.

OMG it looks soo purtty! Mika DO tell me how it runs and if it that powerful. I had the option of getting the older version, but my lhs steered me towards this older Novarossi Top. It's faster, but been a little finicky for me. I'll keep working on it though.
Thanks Saboteur, this is a nice package indeed, at least for the price ($280 whole set)
Sure I will, but the thing is it takes some time before I can drive this car - sorry - as we have snow here for few months still.. :(
Are you driving Proceed yourself?
ps.As you may have noticed the lime green box is the Venom speedmeter; expecting the numbers grow with this one ;-)
ic0nn
01-04-2006, 09:18 AM
that looks very nice. cant wait to get my own car now (backordered).
mika, did you mount/true your own tires or did you buy them from premounted/trued from somewhere?
saboteur: which novarossi/top engine are you referring to? the one with the aluminum sleeve?
Saboteur
01-04-2006, 10:51 AM
Mika- A friend of mine is running one. I wanted to get that package but the LHS steered me towards the TOP since it was faster. From what I heard my Top is also faster than the OS VZ-R.
Ic0nn- I have the Nova/Top PT21 SP1. It has ABC construction, not AAC. Hardly any Novarossi's at the time were made with AAC construction. Infact, I don't recall any especially when this one was made.
Cool, guys! I would have wanted the new Sirio PR PRO enginen but it is way too pricey for this car u know.
ic0nn, my friend trued these tires after I glued them with CA. He don't have a truer but did that somehow manually. Outcome was very nice though.
Heard you could use pre-glued and possibly trued Mugen or Kyosho wheels/tires. Those seem to fit HPI.
ic0nn
01-04-2006, 07:04 PM
Mika: thanx for the info. he may not have a truer but he definitely mounted it onto something rotary (dremel or cordless drill perhaps?) to get the tire rounded like that.
the old kyosho fantom wheels do fit the HPI from rumors I heard. other makes like serpent and mugen fit onto the axle but the offset is all wrong. kyosho now uses the same offsets as the mugen cars.
Saboteur: traditionally nova-based engines rev higher and have more power overall than O.S. while O.S. engines tend to have a broad powerband characteristic. Novarossi did make a few AAC from what I recall. If you look at Brucknerhobbies website they still have a TOP novarossi that has an AAC sleeve.
i'm still shopping around for an engine. after seeing Mika's car I'll probably end up with a RB C5 with matching pipe.
Saboteur
01-04-2006, 07:10 PM
Ic0nn-Yeah I know Nova's are faster. The OS isnt so bad, but overall on a larger track and the way drivers are so fast surely it won't be enough.
ic0nn
01-05-2006, 11:20 AM
Saboteur:
For the price a sport OS 21 isnt bad. The VZ-R is like 299.99 at towerhobbies, which is still less than a sport Novarossi/RB/etc. engine. Plus OS isnt that finicky in break-in and tuning.
Or just get the RB package like Mika did.
Saboteur
01-05-2006, 01:16 PM
I got the Nova at a discounted price so it came to $250. It's running a lot better now since though and has quite a ton of power for a sport engine. My friend wants to trade me his OS for my Nova. NOT A CHANCE! :D Mainly because he didn't break it in properly and ran it kinda lean on an early run.
ic0nn
01-05-2006, 09:50 PM
wow, thats a great deal for a new nova .21, even if it is an older version. the only "sport" nova based engines are the RX221's and even those are like 350 bucks or so. trying to decide if i want a full blown race engine or just a sport engine for my proceed. i wont be racing it, but i would still like something nice.
Saboteur
01-05-2006, 11:38 PM
Those racing .21s are sure pricey. A $400 .21 will have SOO much power, you won't even use all of it. Something $250-$370 is pretty good to beat around with and go on/off traffic. That S7C that Mika has is really great if you want.
ic0nn
01-07-2006, 04:13 AM
i think i'm gonna go with a RX221 for a sport engine or a RB C5 if i want something more serious.
been blowing too much cash lately on r/c stuff, gotta slow down a bit and wait for my credit card and wallet to recuporate :D.
oh yeah, anything special i should be aware of when i'm building my car. i'm very familiar with HPI cars and i've built my share of race vehicles, but this is my first attempt at 1/8th scale.
Glad to hear S7CII should be enough. I had RB C5 on my buggy last season and oh boy it was a flyer. Comin season Im planning to do more Sirio on my bug for a change, let's see.
Proceed is pretty straightforward to build, no surprises I think. It works well out of the box, damn well in fact.
Yes it is common to spend more than enough.. I have three 1/8 cars and that should be enough for a while ;-) (777, XB8R and Proceed)

The C5 for a beginner in 8th is overkill. The one for $400-$500 is insanely fast for an old motor and most racers I run with don't even use all it's power. Stay with the other engine you have as it will be easy to run and get use too. With 8th onroad setup is a real importance. Off suspension settings will result in a car sliding all around, 360s, etc. Remember they have solid rear diffs, not gear diffs.
Yes, I agree on this. Get a good "sport level" engine first, then upgrade as your skills grow.
BTW, Im so glad HPI hasn't discontinued this like they have to Super Nitro lately. I wish they keep this one couple more years at least and perhaps upgrade a bit.

i got a proceed, and im having a problem with my sirio 21 pro racing. it idles ok sometimes or kills for no reason even though the carb hasnt been ajusted. when i get it running its rather rough. and when i get past all that when i rev the engine it stays revving for a second and then goes down. or when i really floor it, it stays revving high till i kill it. anyone else have this engine and this problem?(the engine still needs to be broken in as well, im just tryin to get it to work right.) one more question, the e-clips that hold the rear body supports to the suspension, what size are those. hpi told me they were 2mm and 3mm. i just wanna be sure. the guy who assembled mine(i didnt have the c-ring pliers) said i didnt have enough of them and told me to buy some, i think he kept em for himself.
ic0nn

truenofan:
sounds like either your midrange or most likely your low-end needle is set too lean. also know that any engine will require tuning since they are very sensitive to weather change. this is especially so with race engines that have sensitive carbs.
mika & saboteur:
yeah, one of my friends gave me similar advice when he was trying to convince me to get into 1/8th scale. although i'm not gonna go with the SC7II. i dont like the large heatsink head on that one. the RX221 looks more road worthy. i'm probably gonna make a trip to brucknerhobbies to shop for an engine when my car comes in the mail. hope i dont end up bringing a RX321 home :D.
oh yeah, does anyone know anywhere that sells the HPI on-road exhaust. i cant seem to find it anywhere, not even on Buy HPI (listed, but doesnt let me add to cart).
Truenofan
01-08-2006, 08:37 PM
quick question, on a scale of 1 to 10, is the engine i have pretty good, i didnt get it cuz it was expensive, i got it cuz more or less the car requires it. another problem popped up(fixed the engine carb one). my second gear doesnt seem to spin properly. for some reason it seems to spin at the same speed as my first gear, i revved the engine and it doesnt shift.
ic0nn
01-08-2006, 11:00 PM
even though Sirio has won ifmar's TC and 1/8th scale championships, i'm still a big fan of novarossi engines for the time being. its a good engine but i dont care what magazine writeup says, i dislike composite carbs. i may switch from novarossi soon because i dont like what i'm hearing of the wear life of their new microcast pistons. they should keep them cnc machined from billet.
as far as your second gear goes, the transition between first and second is very subtle. you should hear a slight hesitation from the engine revs then the climb in revs again. its very subtle especially with a shoe type two speed.
ic0nn, the size of the head of the S7II is only 50mm and looks more like .15 size engine than a .21 but I agree it is rather ugly :) I was surprised how small it really is when I got it
Sirio engines are sensitive for correct a plug (the timing of it)
Truenofan, the gear change is indeed very subtle and hard to recognise (other than running when you can see the change). Try loosing the settings and would expect seeing it in some point if your engine is tuned properly (not too rich)
Truenofan
01-09-2006, 06:24 AM
ok, it just didnt seem right to me that when im spinning it, it all spun the same speed. ill try that tonight and see what happens. thx. where can i get a safety shutoff. i dont wanna go flyin off somewhere if i go outta range.
Truenofan, yes, the gears spin at the same speed when it is on first gear. The second takes over (locks with the shoes in it) when wheels spin enough.

mika: i like the look of the C5 head the most. the old RX21R1WC was cool with its kangaroo logo on top of it, but i cant find one NIB anywhere.

Checked Kyosho Evolva tires; they fit at rear but are slightly too wide (in offset), in front I could not fit them, seems the Proceed front axle pins are too long but not sure (anyway could not fit them). May depend on the rim manufacturer.
Need to stick with Proceed tires, rims at least. Here in europe it's a slight problem since the availability isn't that great
ic0nn
01-10-2006, 10:24 AM
no, the evolva tire/wheel combos won't fit the proceed. kyosho changed over their axles to be compatible with mugen cars' tires/wheels starting with their 2003 evolva.
as far as i know, the old kyosho fantom tire/wheels should fit the proceed axles. not entirely sure as this is from word of mouth. and the kyosho fantom rims and tires may be harder to find than our proceed stuff.

you would have to cut the proceed pins in this case to fit the evolva rims in front

Actually, I spotted longer and shorter pins for wheels maybe rims could fit with shorter pins (not checking the manual though)

yeah, getting a new one from towers. gonna modify it with a few parts here and there, but it will remain relatively stock.
congrats ic0nn :-) I found the car pretty good at stock. I have spare red springs and the yellow clutch shoe, which I haven't tried out yet, that's all. Oh yeah and now I have the new BLITZ lola body which I should paint and trim. Gearing is something I might try to change but first I need to find out how the car suits at our local track with the new engine and stock gearing. One can do a lot just by changing the clutch and 2-speed timing, no need for new gears except if you want more top speed or something... I see people have also changed to Delta pillow balls etc. but I see no need yet.
Check my renewated website http://www.freewebs.com/4chassis/ and select 1/8 circuit to see some Proceed and onroad pics..

yeah, i'm about to place an order through delta as soon as they get back to me.
gonna upgrade the clutch with the red disc one, new brake disc, fixed wheel mount, and machined flyweights. i also have some titanium bits to put on the car, but i think that will do it. top it off with the toyota GT-One body and its all set.
i think the proceed is one of HPI's best works ever. its amazing to me how even though HPI has the best compromise between durability and speed that their serious offerings like the proceed and R40 are not as popular as they should be.

got my kit in a week ago. the chassis is a big ol'slab of aluminum. makes my 2.5mm rally chassis look under nourished. the only thing i'm not liking on the car are those C clips that hold the spur gears in place. i dont have the proper tool for that nor have i ever used those types of clips. i will pickup one of those C clip pliers sometime this weekend. as always any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Trueno: check out Ofna or Kimbrough. Kimbrough makes a bunch of different sizes but their large size may do the trick. older serpent 1/8th also used direct servo steering so serpent may also have that servo saver you need.
Mika: you mean that lola body on your proceed can't plow through snow ;).
Guess it won't ;-)
Also, have a new blitz Lola waiting for trimming and painting..

Sweet looking! According to RB's site though this engine has a lil less torque and power than the S7 buggy engine. That bites. :( I like my top, but it's been a discontinued model. That means if something happens to it I may need a new engine. The S7C is slower though so I'd have to sell the nitro sedan and run the 8th alone. Hmmm soo many decisions
Yeah.. maybe so.. but what counts is the rpm.. that makes the speed, not power. Onroad engines have more rpm than buggy ones. I don't think power comparison is made onroad vs. offroad on RB pages, only comparing to other onroad engines like C5.
Saboteur
02-15-2006, 01:41 PM
They do have both S7s on the page. Well it makes more power, lil less fuel consumption and noticable less torque. Still though for where I'll be running at it will be just slow...lol. It really looks awesome though. :)

oh yeah, what wt. oil should i start off with. for my tourers i usually start around 50-60 wt associated oil for my shocks but i figure something this big may take 70 or 80 wt?
Yeah, we'll have to wait a while until we know how it runs. I have the venom speed meter so it is easy to see the speed with stock gearing.
I used the oli supplied with the kit.
Saboteur
02-16-2006, 06:20 PM
Most 8th guys running mugens use 60wt all around with the stock springs. They rarely change it. The most things that matters on 8th onroad they say are tires, swaybar adjustments, and changing the blocks on the car.
ic0nn
02-16-2006, 06:57 PM
i'll throw in some 60 or 70wt in there then. i just wanted a ball park figure. i know most of the time the springs that are included in most HPI kits tend to be on the soft side unless they made a racer version of the same kit. thanx for the info guys.
I tried the red ones, they seemed to work well with the stock oil

has anyone experimented with different brake discs?

yeah man, i was all set to purchase the RX221 and an exhaust but then i found the PR321P Tuned available. It was a 100 more than the RX221 but I think its well worth it considering it is the heart of the car.

i got my proceed up and running, was having problems finding a servo saver, now it runs beautifly, just need to find enough room to give it everything, anyone know of a good reciver/transmitter with good range, and a nice safety, i dont want the thing to go outta range and just die on me(and then go flying into a car or something). i was running it in a parking lot thats roughly 250-350ftx150-225ft, but it isnt enough -_-.

any FM or PCM system will be fine for it. if you are afraid of losing the car due to range or interference, then install a failsafe unit (PCM has one built in).

anyone know if ko propo is any good? im just lookin up something good with a failsafe...cuz i can tell when im leaving my range, it starts acting funny, and delayed in response. oh, and i wont be running it any time soon, i lost the screw for rear power.(gotta buy that one now, and plenty of it, with loctite)
ic0nn
05-14-2006, 11:46 PM
the KO failsafe is similar to the older Futaba unit. the newer Futaba failsafe is much smaller and similar (if not the same OEM) as the Ofna unit. any of the failsafe units will do just fine.
you may not need a high end radio for your car. there are a lot of mid-range FM units that will do fine and allow much more adjustments than the AM units.
saboteur:
do you have the regular spektrum or the new "pro" spektrum?
Saboteur
05-15-2006, 04:37 AM
Ic0nn. I still use the regular spektrum, not the see thru kind. Besides I won't get what I payed for this RX so unless both of them go then the new ones will be bagged. They got some nice features though.

having another problem now, the clutch this time. it seems one of the three little centrifugal things is getting stuck and is always engaging the clutch on that part, and now i cant get a steady idle, i'v dissasembled the clutch assembly and im tightening up a few things that came a little lose, any clue how i could fix this if this doesnt work? one last question, whats a good spot for the spring to engage the clutch.
Make sure you have assembled the clutch as advised in the manual and has some play in it as advised, not too tight. Hope this helps
Saboteur
05-22-2006, 04:34 AM
Clutch gap is important as well as how tight the adjuster nut. Use about .5-.9 MM or clutch gap and a good starting point for the adjuster nut is 1mm (of thread showing. Some cars have stiffer springs so not much adjustment is required. A neat trick for clutch shoes is cut the round one into 4 pieces and use it for the flywheel. This ofcourse is great to do if the shoe is cheaper than the 4 pieces themselves. :) I've tried other 4pc shoes and they seem to melt on the mrx4.

it was one of the short steel things that was rusted on the ends, used my dremel to fix that and its perfect now, i ajusted the clutch so that the thing that sets the spring tension even with the metal threaded thing(i dont know the names at the time, brain fart) but its engaging at a rather high rev, and it kinda skids the tires on cement, but not on tar. garrr....now i gotta dissasemble it again... -_-....more bad news on my end, apparently the set screw that holds the front upper pivot pin, shook lose, the whole front left upper suspension came loose, and then the spring came apart too, now im missing the spring, anyone know where i can get a new one? towerhobbies doesnt carry them, and of course hpi doesnt ship to posts....or is there another type of spring i can use.

Hi, thanks! Well actually the temp is not the problem, we've been racing offroad buggies for about a month now, currently we are talking about 50-60 F or slightly more occasionally. Worse is the yellow breeding "stuff" from trees and plants that covers the asphalt tracks and traction is pretty bad. Let's wait for a while, towards July, then we gonna burn some serious rubber :D No hurry, racing buggies has been fun but can't wait getting my hands on this baby though ;-)
Finally painted and trimmed a new body, expecting to hit the track soon

Yeah, that is short hehe. It looks really great. I wish I could go for one, but it seems I will have to atleast run the RB C5 to get my way around the track. My TOp will need a replacement sooner or later for optimum performance and the onyl available sleeve is the RB C3. Not sure how that runs but I hear it's great.
Yeah, I will change gearing 1 teeth longer so it will stretch out nicely on the long straight.
Hi,
it's been a while. Had a national race last weekend, only 6 racers (this class is not ther most popular these days you know).. I finished third.
They say car is not competitive anymore but I really liked driving it. I was the only driver with HPI, other Kyosho and Mugen.
RB S7II engine lacked slightly on power compared to high power racing counterparts but it was sure easy in all ways. Several collisions but no wreaks. Blitz body took the hits also with ease.
I clocked 88 km/h with Venom. Next, would like to see a Sirio WC or RB C5 on this car.
Cheers,
Mika

Thanks! We are in Europe so I'd say 400€ for the car, 20€ for the body, 250€ for the engine and pipe set, plus radio gear which I basically had already. And some sets of new tires. The good thing with this car is that you can get occasionally spares from eBay pretty cheap.

NVM, just saw some on buy HPI. have you guys ever used these?
I haven't. Must be stronger and lighter than stock arms?
ic0nn
07-30-2006, 06:04 PM
i dont know about stronger, but they look very stiff compared to the stocker HPI plastic and a little lighter. i got the rear arms and hubs with my car but i still need the front arms to make it complete.
generally graphite injected pieces are made to improve suspension performance, but they dont like impacts as much since they dont have as much give.
i also have the 2001 spec chassis that has the cutouts for the bulkheads and midblock mounts so you can use a smaller diameter foams. dont know if i'll use that chassis but its nice to have.
Saboteur
07-30-2006, 09:21 PM
Definately skip on plastic arms. PRP has these alloy arms for the car that are lightweight and VERY strong. If only HPI kept up on the Proceed that'd be rather nice. :)
ic0nn
08-02-2006, 12:19 AM
i tend to stay away from aluminum arms. not because i'm afraid of bending them on impact but because they seem to put additional wear on hingepins compared to plastic or carbon pieces. also they add sprung weight which actually hampers suspension performance. i agree though, aluminum arms look killer.
it seems today's race cars emphasize adjustability. at one point i think it went a little overboard (a la serpent veteq). but the current crop of cars have a good balance between adjustability and actual track performance from a base setup. i think the proceed was designed during a time where adjustability just isnt as much emphasized.
further performance gain would be nice, but i'd like to see them go serpent route by shaving some weight off the drivetrain, like the 2 speed and hollowing out the main shaft and midlbock layshaft.
i kinda like the way the car looks now. very clean layout. i could have bought an MRX-4 for what i paid to setup my proceed. but i've always been a big fan of this particular car and HPI in general.
just out of curiousity where can you get the PRP arms?
Saboteur
08-02-2006, 07:18 PM
Well these actually aren't alum. They are a LOT stronger and I've seen two withstand some high speed crashes upto 45mph+. Off throttle you won't kiss the boards as hard especially if you have drag brake on. If not, then yeah it's gonna hurt a bit more. These arms will fit the PRP only though. The LHS up here in CT fits them, but maybe you can order them online. They look like they are black anodized, but again I'd have to recheck on the type of metal.

takes me a while to finish things but i'm building two cars at once. one will soon be sold to my friend, the other will be mine.
i was somewhat surprised by the finish of the plastic pieces. most were the usual HPI quality but there were some miscellaneous parts that had a very rough type of finish with lots of flash. and this isnt because of my particular kit, i have two kits and they both have the same quality more or less.
