I'm current reading Max Jammer's "Concepts of Mass" which I think you might enjoy. Every time I used that 15-oz. hammer I thought I knew what I was doing. Apparently not.

Hello Richard,
I will check in our local college library. I tend to have a desire to not be to confused with facts at this point in life. My misconceptions and simplistic views are really pretty comfortable. But I will look and see what you are talking about.

Dave,

It is not knowing about mass that entertains me in such excursions as these - I read Jammer's book on Force earlier - but the - well, epistemological aspects. All the things that men have thought about force and mass and all the rest of it during the last 2500 years, and the reasons, and what it has all come to.

Meanwhile the 15-oz. hammer works just as intended.
