Hello again,
I have just finished my most recent project. I have converted an Airhogs model into RC. Im not sure what this plane is called though if someone could help me out on that. I got it from a friend. I have a IPS A drive turning a 7 1/8 x ? prop from a rubber powered P-51 Mustang. The spinner is the one that was originally on the air-powered prop. GWS R4P, x2 GWS pico servos (arl, rud) and the GWS 2 amp speed control. A 7 cell 150mah pack will power it. Total weight with pack, 6oz. Wingspan 26in. I have no clue if this thing will fly or not. I have a funny feeling i should upgrade to a GWS 10x4.7 prop. But i dont have one right at the moment. Ideas and comments welcome.

Hi all_fly_all_day,
To paraphrase another correspondent [Taylorcraft?] "even a brick will fly if you have enough power". Although your aircraft is impressively light at 6oz I wonder if it has enough wing area to stay aloft at the speed a GWS IPS A will propel it at. You don't give wing area but just looking at it I imagine it can't be much more than 72 sq. in, so your wing loading is 12oz/sq.ft. My feeling is that it is a heck of a lot to expect out of your tiny motor (no matter what prop you try) to get that plane to a flying speed which will keep it in the air. Just for fun I threw the figures into MotoCalc and the max. flying speed indicated (14mph) is less than the stall speed (17mph)! However, all such doom and gloom calculations can be thrown the window if you take it out and find that it flies like a bird! Go do it!. Best of luck, Phil

Thanks phill. I did the math and it works out to 8oz/sq. ft. So I dont know. Im still going to try it just like you said.
Hi all_fly_all_day ,
Nice job. Hope it will fly well.
Did you see the end of this thread:

It seems to be the same plane. Maybe you could exchange ideas with Pacoson who made it...

By the way, I think this plane is a Curtiss P-40

Hi FLB [and all_fly_all_day]
You are correct - AFAD's plane is definitely a P-40, but it is not the Hobbico P-40 model HCAA0232 (20" span). Neither is it the Hobbico Spitfire HCAA0235 (also 20" span) which Pacoson built. AFAD - 8oz/sq.ft is better than I thought but I still surmise the GWS will not make the grade. Just drop an AstroFlight 010 into it and it will have to fly!!!!!! Cheers, Phil.
Hi Dr Kiwi,
Thanks for the info.
About Pacoson's plane, I don't know if you see the end of the referenced thread I gave (end of page 2), it's a P40 with a chinese paint scheme. I think it's the one of the "Flying Tigers", some american pilots who fight for Tchang Kai-Chek in China.
The Spitfire in the same thread is from Gary alias Sr71fan. Both planes must be Hobbico ones as you said. I tought it would be a good source for all_fly_all_day to prepare his model.

Hi all_fly_all_day,
It looks like you have made fonctionnal ailerons on your model. I'm curious to see how it will be in flight. Hope you can make some rolls... ;) so we can see nice flight pictures. Pacoson used a more classic configuration for what I see one the pictures (rudder & tail).

Thanks guys
FLB: Yes I did put on ailerons for two reasons. I like flying with them better than rudder, and if you look at the picture you will see that the rudder is so thick I dont think I would have been able to put one on it. be sides, nothing looks cooler than to "bank and yank" a warbird right in front of you. Im not sure if i will be able to roll but I certainly will try! Ill see if i can get any pictures. But I still think that motor wont have enough "oomph".
Dr. Kiwi: I would love to go brushless. But thats pretty much out of my price range right now:D . I have another question...
I have a speed 380 motor with a DD prop on it. What if I drop that in the nose. I dont have a suitable* battery for it yet except a 6c 900mah NIMH but that weighs as much as the plane.:p I would also need to buy another speed control for it then too which means more money. Im just praying this thing will fly. And if it doesnt, Im picking up a big foam glider and converting it just like Gary did. Thanks you guys. Pictures will be here either today or tomorrow weather permitting...

Take Care

Looking further at the plane
You made a good call by leaving the rudder off. There really is no rudder there its just sort a stab. You could of moded to fita rudder but by the looks of it ,it would not of been very effective.not much surface area there plus your wings look flat anyway...Good Job AFAD:D
