Racing the novak ss brushless in stock class.

Any body racing with the novak system?? I know its not roar legal but most tracks and clubs will let you race it. I like mine pretty good, It seems to have alot more torque than a stock motor. And the acc. limter will throw you off till you get used to it. I am racing it off road on a pretty tight track with a final ratio of 13.05. on this track if you go any lower on gearing it runs too hot for my taste. But even with that gearing it seems to be as fast or faster than any stock motor I have ever ran. Let me know what you think about in stock mode.

I've run it in my TC3 in stock mode. I have to say it was very odd the first time I tried it. When the speed control limited the motor with a pulse-action I though it would break in two! I seriously thought something was wrong with it until I read the instructions further. I had to get used to the different throttle response that the brushless puts out in stock mode. Rather than the usual non-exitement acceleration of a stock motor, the brushless jumps like it was a mod and then gets speed limited by the controler. I admit it does give you the edge out of corners. I definitely like it. I mostly use it in mod/no reverse mode, however.

The weird thing about these Novak BL's is that they all sound so different from each other. I can barely notice the difference between the 'mod' and 'stock' settings on mine. The stock setting is way faster than a stock brushed motor. I've noticed the pulsing action in stock, but only when I hold the car in the air and give it full throttle.

So I just leave mine in the 'mod' setting. When I race it in the stock class, I adjust the settings on my radio to try make it fair. I usually set the throttle EPA to about 80% and set the throttle speed to -15. I run with an M8 controller.

But the problem I find when running it in the stock class is that everyone wants it to be no faster than THEIR motor, even if their stock motor is running a little slow. I try to make sure that it's a tad slower than the fastest motor out there, but this doesn't satisfy everyone. And, of course, it IS an illegal motor, so I just have myself DQ'd if anyone complains. As long as they record my time, I still have fun.

My hope is that more guys will get the Novak and we'll see more mod classes run, which is what I'd like better anyway. But it looks like it's going to be a slow transition. Sigh....

Yeah I agree with that. I work at my LHS and we had the SS brushless in the shop for two months before anybody even thought about buying one. I had to finally buy one ond put it in my TC3 and T3 to show the guys at the races what it could actually do. After they saw the performance of the system, five of them came into the store and bought a brushless system. People just need to see it run, then they will come around and buy it.

I race mine in stock class and I can run head to head with the fastest stock driver out there at my track. However I am not yet a good enough driver to pose much of a threat of comming in first. I do run it in stock mode to be fair, and to be honest, I get better lap times in stock mode anyway. The car has more control that way. I race my other Novak SS in my XXX4 and it flies in mod mode. In 4wd open class I am a definite threat! I wish I had that kind of control in 2wd.

if brushless becomes popular enough, does anyone think they will have a brushless class?

I imagine eventually there will be brushless classes and very possibly in the distant future we'll probably see brushed go away almost entirely. But until more manufacturers build systems that are designed for racing (like Novak's) and build them within the same guidelines we won't see a class specifically for them.

I just wanted to know how ppl felt about the performance of the novak on a racing level. The only thing that i dont like about the novak in the ss mode it the accel limiter. other than that it is friggin great. I love the power it has even in the sportsman mode and i really like not having to work on the friggin thing!

Crono,
If the speed controller is getting hot gear up some. I have found that one tooth can make a big difference in heat but not change the speed that much. my current ratio is about 13.80

I would also like you guys to post with your final ratios and what rc car you are running it in, and what type of track that you run on. This will help everybody know how to gear the novak. Sorry for so many post...
