I'm building a custom gas tank !

I picked up some brass metal yesterday at the hardware store, and started building a custom gas tank. Its for my 1/8 scale T-Maxx. This tank is almost done, but I need to get more brass to make the top and I'm gonna design it to have the stock gas lid from my monster pirate tank, its also gonna have no internal fuel filter, just an in-line. It holds 8oz's ! The tanks weight itself is'nt to much, no heavier then a CVEC pipe. It soaking right now to get all the extra flux off. Its got 3 mounting holes on the bottom. heres some pics, I dont plan on racing, I just bash currently, but still have my stock tank in case.

Nice custom job, I take it youve done this simply to hold more fuel? Does the rest of you tmaxx have a gold/ brass look to it?

lol, naw, I plan on painting it. I'm sure you may have seen Fuel Safe fueel cells, well I was gonna paint it red with white same as they make there fuel cells. Majority of my truck is silver. It should be great when its finished. Its a very strong construction. Heres a pic of my truck, when its painted I'll post my truck with the tank in it.

the pic is for people who have asked about pics of my truck before

I'd suggest getting some plastic of some sort, maybe glass. Then you could put a "window" of some sorts on the tank to see how much fuel you have left.

thats a good idea about the window, I got some plexi glass in the garage. I'll pick up some stainless steel screws/nuts when I get more sheet brass for the top of the tank. It will look kinda like a submarine window, cool.

tonite I mounted the fuel outlet on the inside of the tank ,and mounted the nipple into it as well. When I get the lid made and the exhaust pressure inlet put on and the window, I'll get it all sanded for paint and picture will be posted of the tank ,and the tank mounted, this will all be done by tomorrow night(without paint) and painted picture following tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

I agree about the window, put it near the bottom so once it gets below the window you need a refill. I'd also paint it a chrome color to make it match

No, a chrome gas tank would too conventional. I think if he painted some sort of design on it, then it would look like he spen plenty of time on it. Come to think of it, i don't think I've ever seen a painted tank. I wonder if the concourse guys have thought of this...

what a job its been, I went an bought metal, then went and bouth screws. I drew out the window templates and marked and cut a hole in the tank. Then made a window outta plexi glass. The window sucked but by the 3rd one it finally turned out, then I drilled the hold on it and the tank, cut out a paper gasket dipped it in oil and put it into place and put the screws on, its weighed a noticibly more didnt look as I would have liked it to, then took it out and put a piece of brass into place to patch it up.Then I got to making the lid, its a pain in the but right there. I spent like 2 hrs on it and I'm still not happy with it , heres some pics below, and I even got my final 4 shocks for the front, as the pictures above have tie rods

You should put dam plates in there; they're for when you accelerate or brake hard, so the gas doesn't stay at one end of the tank.

I'm unsure still, I may just go all siver I may go all black, but to have if professionaly chrome plated would be blingin! hers another pic.

One other thing I just thought of, will the plexi-glass window be strong enough you you land hard, or have a rock shot at it from the tires? Maybe cut some bars out of that brass and make some sort of guard?

That gas tank of yours that you are building is very apealing to the eye; I like it.

I know of a publication for Radio controlled models; a person with an alias of "mytruckwontrun" owns a very nice vehicle, known as the T-maxx. It has many aluminum parts installed on it.

On this T-maxx aforementioned, there is a fuel tank installed which happens to be chromed, I like it as well.

I wish you nothing but the best of luck to you on the rest of your "gas tank" project.
