Message editing

Steve,
Why is the edit function turned off in some of the forums? We can't fix mistakes in our own messages. Is the edit function something that is activated by thread?

Thanks,
Mike

You are able to edit posts for up to five hours, which should be ample time to correct mistakes. The only area that you cannot edit posts is in the trading sections.

If I may ask, what's the reason for a 5 hour limit? I have an old post with a dead link I'd like to fix, but I can't. I've owned and managed several forums over the years and I've never ran across a problem that would lead me to this kind of solution. Of course, it is your forum and I respect that.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike - there was a significant enough number of instances where someone would erase a post that was the subject of a complaint. There were other issues as well, but we tried to strike a balance of allowing enough time to correct mistakes and at the same time prevent some of the problems that would arise from unrestricted ability to edit posts. I'm certainly open to suggestions from someone with experience operating forums.

I was just thinking... is it possible to make it so after the 5 hour time limit you can add an edit to the post? So the original post is still there, and the new part is added below it.

I don't believe so.

Thanks for the clarification. This is a new forum format for me and I thought it was just a feature of the software itself. I think this forum software is the same one that's included in the H-Sphere web hosting control panel.

Thanks,
Mike
