2WD or 4WD

What do you guys think would be the best choice?

From what I understand this is just a top speed race. So why not just go 2wd for the less drag in the drivetrain and less power loss. I like 4wd
(awd in sports cars) better because of the added accleration power, but for pure top speed I think RWD would be better.

2wd, is less drag, and power loss. BUT..
2wd is also alot harder to handle at high speeds than 4wd. Cliff Lett is one that proved that point.

2wd I have no doubt will be near uncontrollable with the ammount of power people are looking at putting in cars.

The 12L3 that was driven was 2WD.

and it wasn't even that high powered.. just high rpm.
he also tested his TC3. tried both 4wd, and 2wd, and said the speed difference wasn't that noticable at all, but the handling was ALOT better with 4wd.

Like Dualbl said they both have there advantages. One nice thing about 4wd is that you dont have to be as careful starting because they wont burn tire on you so you can gun it right off the start. Unlike 2wd if your not careful you will peel out.
4wd wont get the top speed a 2wd will, because of the extra rotating mass, friction and the extra size and weight 4wd cars comonly have more of than 2wd because of the independent suspention and drive shafts, belts ect.

however, the 4wd would carry better speed through the corner, and therefore allow you to reach higher speed in the straight.

You mean going to the strait away on the other sid e of the track.
Yea it would carry the speed better around the turn, if your transmitter can reach that far and you have a nitro. If your running eletric I would bet that you would lose battery power before you make it around to the other side of the track.
Theres no telling whats better because it matters to your plan to reach the speed your looking for and how your car is designed. Meaning if you want to reach the top speed on the first strait away, you would probby use 2wd, but like you said if your using the other side of the track,4wd would be your best bet.

Electrics won't run out of batts that fast. As for the radio range, this is a pretty small track, right (as NASCAR tracks go)

Your probbly right but I think its going to be about the equipment you run in you car. If your running a 4wd car and plan to use the other side of the track you dont want to use AA size batteries thoes would probly run out, you would want c or d size. For a 2wd car and want to do a sprint speed run, you could use AA size batteries, you can fit more so you have more volts and they weight less.
Like i said before, none of them are better than the other its just how you plan to get your top speed.

2wd all the way for the ovious reasons,
-less drag in the drive train
-less weight
-less rotating mass

which is all good for greater efficiancy.

Personally, I will be running a custom chassied. 2WD nitro dragster. Will have pics up when I am completed. I have machined and milled the chassis, now it is just a matter of creating the ideal suspension setup, and steering.

BTW, Im gonna search out and find the highest gearing available for the NTC3 2 speed, if anyone knows where I can obtain the parts, please let me know.

I too am making a dragracer type car. Dual eletric motor's though. I just know that thing is going to make it hard to prevent peeling out.

This can be debated all day long. I have been testing both - 2wd and 4wd. You can reach crazy speeds with both. The advantage to a 2wd car is that it is easier to setup and get everything positioned well in the car. Yeah you can argue the less drag deal - that is not as a big deal as everyone makes. Look at a pan car, and then look at a touring car. There is a lot more room for batteries and electronics on a pan car because there is not any drive shaft or belt in the way.

I personally feel 4wd is the best choice if you can find a way to get-r-done with a 4wd.

Anyhoo - that is just one persons opion. I am sure there will be many more from others.

Power needed to overcome the friction of rotating parts is going to be much, much, much less than the power needed to overcome the air resistance at 100+ MPH. It takes 8 times the power to go twice as fast. Just the laws of physics. I would personally use 4wd for greater stability and control, as well as traction. If you're trying to put down enough power to run 100+, you're not going to have much traction left over for steering and such if all that power is channeled through 2 wheels. I say aerodynamics will play a HUGE role in deciding who the winner is. Brute power can get you up there, but there needs to be control(which I believe includes braking to avoid the wall). Just my .02
