nic...first of all, congrats on being the fastest of the fast! question? would that set-up work for an electric 1/8th scale off-roader? i'm using a 20C 4cell li-po pack. my home track is the Mokeybottom raceway in lexington,nc. ( a review of a certian E-storm kit was done there not long ago). i wanna convert one of my buggies for the unlimited "exibition" race...thanks.

I was responding to Figit090's remark about what does it matter what the condition of the car, running or not.

All the Rules must me followed.

alternate power sources are not allowed.
broken cars are also not allowed.

Honestly, I didn't write the rules...

I wish they hadn't changed the date

The IMDRA western nats were a few weeks ago. A week before the last date for the speed competition. I wanted to come to Cali and run in both. Maybe next year the dates will be closer together. I ended up not making the Western Nats either. On well something to look forward to next year.

Thanks for backing me up

I’d like to Thank all the people who have backed me up, in support of the 160.1mph run.
To all of my Family & Friends , Craps, myndsey, rockpiledriver, rollin, Figit090, rainmantoo, CharlieS, gonzo35, NIC, balang 479, Hz-R, thefasttrack, Mini-Tbasher55, z-man280, southwesttour,-----Thank You--------
Thanks to Brad Williams & Sigurd Ruschkowski for the doing the mathematics,
which supports that 160mph is possible.

------JUST TO BE CLEAR---- The Facts Are --------
1) Neither crash happened on the 134.4mph OR the 160.1mph run.
2) Each car was operational after their Fastest runs.
3) There was no mention of a “back-up” run in the 2006 rules.

I am sharing all the info about the equipment in my cars in the
November issue of RCCA. I’m happy to share on this site, as well.

Records were made to be broken…………………Who’s next?

regardless of what is said, YOU WENT 160!!!!!! That alone means all it has to, people i think lose the concept of this- in my opinion, backed up or not, whoever goes fastest wins!!!!!
I know i will catch the usual flack for that, but if we sat and watched someone hit the "perfect" set up ,clutching and ect. in NHRA top fuel, and click off a 375+ mph run, we would all be in awe, and give props to the guy who did it. Is that possible? you bet it is, 8,000 hp cannot be totally harnessed as of yet, and half or more is wasted in clutching and tires.

That being said, Nick, as far as myself and i am sure many others are concerned,

YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!

congrats Bro.

Ron

yeah i was just thinking about that...

what if there was a NHRA race... the winner clearly won....maybe by a car length. then exploded (or otherwise was un-drivable after the race) would it still count? lol...bad metephor. just came to mind and i thought i'd share. it actually doesnt quite compare...it's a race not a top speed run.

anyway... congrats if you did in fact break it with 160. even if you didn't....congrats. i did not personally read the rules so i dont know for sure, but since there isn't any back-up thing and you didnt violate any rules....cool!

oh and i'll take a look at that mag! sounds pretty sweet!

Congrats on the 160mph, any plans to do more runs with it?

It would be interesting to know how fast it accelerates too, I bet it must hit 100mph in a sick time!

Hard case, I got a couple of questions: First, did you lock out the diffs on the tc3? Second, why did you pick that particular speed controller? Third, which do you think performed better the capped tires or the foams? Fourth, Did you use aluminum drive axles and aluminum main shaft? Fifth, how do you think a negative ratio affects amp draw? Sixth, Do you feel the customworks body you used on the tc3 gave you enough downforce for traction.

Congradulations!

Thanks jhbronx,
Believe it or not, that NTC3 had a pretty basic set-up on it; std diffs, aluminum drive drive shaft, aluminum cvd’s & the caps worked great! Foams are good too. Flip a coin at this point. As far as the gear ratio is concerned -- it’s all about rollout. The Custom Works Body, (Bullet Wedge) was really good on the 2wd car. But the body I ran on the TC3 was custom made.

Do you plan on attending the next WFRCCC? It’s a rush……..
Cheers
Nic

I thought that body was custom designed! S-o-m-e-b-o-d-y reported it was a customworks body(CarAction) !? I contacted customworks and they didn't recognize it. I would like to buy a couple of those bodies like the one on the TC3, as I'm sure 100 people more would as well. Does your friend sell them?

Yep, I do plan on attending, vacation time permitting. It would be nice if it was held on the east coast. I'm still in the process of designing a car on paper. I've been searching the internet for the best parts and a good chassis as my foundation to modify from. I'd really like to make something 1/9 scale size, for a lower center of gravity and more room on the chassis for electronics.

I know, but the tires available for that car are hard to find and not very sticky. I'd have to glue them on, and pray that they hold together. I'm not sure the battery placement is sufficient for two 4s lipo packs. The bodies availabilty is another issue. I always felt like HPi used cheap, soft nylon for their parts. This car is just sooo dated. I want something newer to build from. I was thinking about just streching the wheelbase and width of a regular touring car.

Dont forget that nic used an 18 year old car, and he was able to get unofficialy 160 mph and it sure looked and sounded like it if you were at the track.

Good point. But, I still think the problem will lie in the tires and belts. Sure they were available belted (if you can still find them) but unlike capped BSR tires or foam tires the supersize HPI tires are glued on the edge of the rim by the consumer, and at around 134 miles an hour I would suspect that they're gonna blow off the rim. Balance of the tire would be crucial as well and the belts on that car are too narrow. I can see those stripping or snapping. Believe it or not I'm leaning towards some old Tamiya shaft drive configurations as this would free up a lot of chassis space and offer the optimum balance for my two 4s lipo configuration. Sort of like what's on Tamiya's Dark shadow car.

The way how the drivetrain especially those nylon/plastic diffs dont look like they could handle that amount of power.Plus that vehicle is designed for offroad use not for onroad

Nah, I meant I liked the layout of the tranny on the Dark Impact. The whole car is Fisher price quality.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to chime in here.

A comment was made about a top speed Dark Impact. I actually built one this summer. I made my own CF chassis to hold the equipment. It was setup with a 6S lipo pack and a Hacker C40 12T motor. The car went 64 MPH consistantly. However, any faster and the chassis (not to mention the tires) would not handle it.

I am now running a FT TC4 that is running 96 MPH with a 3300 KV Kontronic motor on 6S. I have a new HV ESC and a 5300 KV Hacker to install (along with ceramic bearings for the motor). That 96 MPH was at 64,454 RPM. The new motor should run 98,000 under load. The big issue is getting the car to hook with that much power. My current setup draws nearly 1500 watts at peak. The new setup should draw about 1800 watts or more.

When building both of my cars, I was able to predict the top speed of each car within about 5% of their actual top speed. Nick's 160 MPH run should be very easy to calculate (calculate the theoretical top speed) with simple math. The biggest issue with any RC car above 100 MPH is getting it up to speed and slowed down while still being able to see it.

160 is just plain wicked. Period! I think anything over 100 is commendable. My guess would be that most hard core entrants will be oevr 100 next year, a few will be over 125 and one or two will break 150.

I would love to be there. But, for me, this is just for fun.

Oh, one question, do they allow steering gyros? I am running one in each of my cars and it makes the car alot easier to drive at the limit.

Matt
