Traxxas hooks up with ATV star Doug Gust

This photo borrowed from the Speed site, www.speedtv.com.

The press release below isn't really for us dedicated RC guys--it's for the rest of the world! I'm posting it here just to show what Traxxas is doing to promote RC beyond the regular channels. It's a cool move; quad fans seem like natural RC guys to me (in fact, Traxxas' Steve Slayden himself is a big quad rider) --Pete

‘Digger’ Doug Gust
Endorses Traxxas Radio Control Model Trucks

Plano, Texas – Traxxas, the world’s leading maker of Ready-to-Race ® (RTR) 1/10th scale electric and nitro powered radio controlled (R/C) models is excited to announce that legendary ATV racing champion and R/C model enthusiast “Digger” Doug Gust has agreed to endorse and help promote the company’s products within the ATV market.

Gust, three-time ATVA GNC Champion and reigning Champion of the WPSA Powersports ATV Tour, has been involved with the R/C hobby for years. His favorite current model is the Traxxas RevoTM, the #1 racing Monster Truck and most advanced model in R/C truck history. He also owns several other Traxxas models and has owned several dozen different R/C cars and trucks during his time in the hobby. At his home, he built an off-road racing course for his models and often hosts fellow enthusiasts over for some ‘friendly’ R/C truck racing.

“Hobby-class radio controlled models like what Traxxas offers are above what you would call a toy. This is true motorsports just at a smaller scale,” commented Gust. “It’s a great hobby that can involve detailed engine tuning, suspension set ups, performance modifications, customizing, and of course, racing. Or you can keep it really simple and just go have a great time racing or bashing trucks with your friends around the yard or at the park or at a construction site. Traxxas makes it really easy to get started in R/C and to keep you out having fun and not having to put something together from a box of parts. Anyone who enjoys any kind of motorsports should really check out Traxxas models. They are really lots of fun.”

During the 2007 WPSA tour, the ATVA Championship series, and other ATV racing events in which Gust participates, Traxxas models will be on display and catalogs will be available during autograph and pit access periods. Traxxas will also develop a new ATV-market advertising campaign using Gust’s celebrity endorsement.

Bill Carter, Director of Marketing at Traxxas, explains the connection with ATV Racing, “We know through experience that people who enjoy ATVs, whether racing or just out having a great time, very often will get that same excitement from high-performance R/C trucks. Many ATV racers, motorcycle racers, NASCAR drivers, etc. are very much into the hobby-class R/C world. We’ve successfully made people aware of our brand of products through ATV magazine advertising for a couple of years now, and moving up to a level with an endorsement by a legend like Digger will help us let even more people know about this great hobby.”

Product line information and company history information can be found at www.traxxas.com.

Doug Gust, who is known as ‘Digger’ by his legions of fans, has been riding for the Factory Suzuki ATV race team the last four years and competes on a Suzuki LT-R450 QuadRacer. His first ATV race was in 1987, and has been a leading ATV race professional for nearly ten years. His achievements include:

2006 Champion, WPSA ATV Tour, SuperQuad Pro 450 Class
2006 2nd Place, GNC ATV Pro Class
2005 2nd Place, GNC ATV Pro Class
2004 Champion, GNC Pro Class
2003 Champion, GNC Pro Class
1999 Champion, GNC Pro ATV

I can't believe it; no mention of the E-Maxx. I know that the ATV enthusiast is more likely to be into nitro, but come on. This better be a hint at a new version or all new electric monster.

Just a heads up: I'm going to start deleting posts if this turns into another where's-the-E-Maxx cry fest. There are already threads devoted to that. The only thing worth talking about here is what you think of Traxxas' ideas for promoting RC (pro or con, all opinions welcome), and any ideas YOU might have for promoting RC. Or we can discuss quads. But we're not going to go through yet another "here's what Traxxas should make" session.

...Wow. that's the first time I've heard this hobby talked about like that.

That's exactly what this hobby needs, is promotion in this way.

Way to go Traxxas!

I think that's cool as heck. First, they sponsor a monster truck. Now they're sponsoring a quad rider... Why can't more companies do this?

Funny, i just bought a quad last week - you might be onto something...

Grizzly 450 4wd with lockable diff, 4 hi and lo and serious mud potential...just like my T-maxx.

Nice job Traxxas - what a cool company. Still trying to talk my wife into moving to texas so i can work there. Working on RC for a living?? What a cool job!! But so far have been very, very, very unsuccessful...but i did talk her into a quad...

I think you just gave me a whole new reason to cry!

Anyway, this is pretty cool, I would like it if they had a few trucks running between heats or something, that way people could actually see what these things can do. A Revo 3.3 should be able to handle most of the track, or at least have a few nice crashed trying to.

No worries Smib, you get huge points in my book for the dancing Strongbad avatar! --Pete

Why don't they just put up a Revo against a quad to show what they REALLY can do?

I dirt bike, and my Revo has smoked lots of dirt bikes at the track. And its no secret that bikes are faster than quads (not to dig on quads or anything) So a Revo should be able to take a quad on.

I think Trazzas should have this guy and a killer booth at the X-Games this summer. How cool would it be to take a Revo at one of the Moto-X Freestyle jumps and launch it 50ft. in the air?!? All those kids there watching there heros, and then you bust out one of these high end, performance based RC machines....The crowd would go absolutely crazy! Think what kind of return on their investment they would get by doing soemthing like that! Imagine seeing a Revo launch like that on ESPN and ESPN2 and ABC during the X-Games! They wouldn't be able to keep the shelves stocked for quite a while, I'm sure!

Good job on the marketing Traxxas! Thanks for marketing the best RC company around...Traxxas! Plus, thanks for marketing our entire sport too!

Actually, from now on, let's call this a sport rather than a hobby! Heck, they call NASCAR drivers and pro golfers athletes, so our hobby should be called SPORT!

Wow, Traxxas picked a really cool guy to promote the Revo ! I started racing Quads a year after Doug and met him at many a GNCC and he is a really nice guy and a great Quad rider ! I can remember him running in the "open" class on his 250 , while I was racing my 'zilla 500 and he would smoke most of us. It's good to see him still at it and now helping out the R/C market as well !

A scale ATV would be pretty sick. I would like to see that happen. The one that Akura2 posted is pretty insane.

I'd be all over a scaled ATV!!!!! I'm converting my Savage into one right now. But a true to scale ATV would be sick! It's what the R/C hobby needs! Glad they choose Doug to do some promoting of R/C.

I'm a big quad fan, nothing like riding a quad in wide open sand dunes!
Here is a pic of mine.

"Traxxas makes it really easy to get started in R/C and to keep you out having fun and not having to put something together from a box of parts."

I think that's where Traxxas screwed up! Building something together from a box of parts, it's half the fun for me. I have yet to buy a Revo, T-maxx, E-maxx or any other RTR. Oh, I know Traxxas is not crying about loosing my sale, but now everything Traxxas makes is RTR. Why not have a kit and RTR for each model? More and more RTR and less kits is bad for the hobby. Everyone should have build at least one kit by now, or your not really in the hobby, your just a guy driving a prebuilt toy.

Now, if I want a Stampede, Rustler, or Bandit I have to buy the RTR. But wait, I have a Radio and ESC and I just want the kit! Sorry, you have to buy it all at two times what the kit price was, and half the fun being RTR.

If your going to be in this hobby your going to have to wrench and work on your R/C anyway. It's better to buy a kit, so you know the car inside and out.

So, why is Traxxas trying to make it out to be awful, and something you don't want to do?

agrred - I like traxxas and have quite a few of them, but i sorely miss building kits. The revo would have been a great build!

Another reason to watch quad racing
It would be cool to see rc demos in-between racing as well.

I don't know if you guys get it. But the Outdoor Life Network (OLN) here in Canada has RCTV on Saturday mornings at 5:30 and 7:30am. They cover everything from boats, flying and racing.

Put a HPI quad body on your E/T-Maxx and you have a r/c quad.
