Novak Goat Crawler System

Get to the Top with the Goat
As the R/C crawling segment gains popularity, the need for crawler-specific equipment has become greater. Novak is happy to fill the need with the new Goat Crawler Brushless System (#3019), Goat Crawler Brushless/Brush ESC (#3219), and Crawler Sintered Brushless Motor (#3419). Novak has always felt that brushless technology is an ideal fit for crawling applications due to their instant throttle response, super low-speed drivability, and explosive torque — the very features crawling enthusiasts look for.

As any crawler aficionado can tell you, crawler vehicles require precise movement control at very low speeds. That being said, it makes sense to use equipment specifically designed for this purpose. Enter Novak Electronics. One of the few, if not the only R/C manufacturer, who offer electronic products specifically designed for crawlers. The new sensor-based Crawler Brushless Motor and System are equipped with features that enable crawlers to climb over, maneuver through, and conquer the most challenging terrain.

The following four driving profiles make the Goat a versatile speed control:

Standard Crawler — maintains crawler motor response in both forward and reverse and features high-powered drag brakes.
Expo Crawler — features the standard crawler profile but uses a built-in exponential curve for smoother response to accommodate entry-level transmitters.
Servo/Robotic Mode — features precise and symmetric motor control in forward and reverse for robot applications, but without the drag brake.
Brushed Mode — is automatically selected when used with a brushed motor. For use with brushed motors down to 27-turns.
And if multiple profiles weren’t enough, Novak’s software experts have designed the Goat ESC with a Fully-Programmable Interface using Novak’s easy One-Touch button and four LEDs. The following parameters can be adjusted in all four driving profiles: Dead Band, Minimum Drive, and Hill/Drag Brakes (except Servo/Robotic Mode). The Drive Frequency can also be adjusted in the Brushed Mode. For further flexibility, the Li-Po Cutoff Circuitry can be activated in all of the throttle profiles, and Motor Rotation Direction can be activated in any of the three brushless profiles.

The Goat ESC has also been outfitted with a rugged 6 volt / 5 amp BEC to provide powerful and precise steering while embarking on unsteady landscape, with no additional BEC to purchase or install. It also employs an exclusive active drag brake that uses battery power to slow the vehicle to a wheel-locking stop, reducing the vehicle’s tendency to slide or roll while traveling on steep grades.

Additional features of the Goat ESC include Zero Reverse Delay for instant power delivery in both forward and reverse when needed; adjustable Active Hill/Drag Brakes that use battery power to slow the vehicle to a wheel-locking stop; and a Built-In 6-Volt Power Output for an optional cooling fan or detail items like lighting features or a winch.

The other half of the brushless system is Novak’s new Crawler Sintered Brushless Motor, which is an 18.5-turn motor. This specially-designed brushless motor scales over other brushed motors because of its massive start up and low-speed torque, all without sacrificing speed. This eliminates the need to use 3-cell Li-Po packs like other out-runner motors, which adds unnecessary weight to the rig. Novak’s lightweight brushless system can tackle the most challenging terrain on 2-cell Li-Po packs.

Additional features of the Crawler Sintered Brushless Motor include sensor-based commutation for precise rotor position control; a high-performance sintered rotor for stronger motor braking power and improved performance in higher temperature conditions; an oversized front bearing for extra durability and extended life; ribbed aluminum end bells to reduce weight; and a solder tab system for flexible soldering options.

The Novak Goat Crawler Brushless System (#3019) includes everything that is needed for crawling straight out of the box. The Crawler Sintered Brushless Motor is factory-installed to the Goat ESC making installation a breeze. Both the Goat Crawler Brushless/Brush ESC (#3219) and Crawler Sintered Brushless Motor (#3419) are also available separately.

I love novak products as much as the next guy.....but what do you tell the customers who just bought the novak other new and improved crawler system that just came out?,..,.


all this stuff isn't cheap.....

I'm one of those guys who has an older Novak system, and I'm still glad they have yet another model. The crawler I'm working on now will have this system. My slightly older crawler with the slightly older Novak system will still work.

It's the state of RC right now. Look at the electric touring car class- Team X-Ray, Corally, and Tamiya come out with a new model or revision of a model every 4-6 months, and all of the racers immediately sell their old race-proven rig for the new model. I agree with Matt on this one- the "oldies" (if you can still call them that) are still goodies. I would much rather have a company coming out with new, innovative, and more capable products frequently, then to not come out with anything at all for months or years even. It keeps the hobby flowing, and for companies like Novak to fight the competition, they have to come out with the New Widget. But, like the electric touring car class, Novak's Rooster Crawler Edition will still be an incredible speed control. The fact of the matter is that this new line of Rock Crawling speed controls gives the modeler just another choice for their custom (or stock) crawler.

Thumbs up Novak. Thanks for recognizing Rock Crawling as a rising class of hobbyists.

Hey To clarify, the Original SS Crawler had a couple revisions. Then we announced a Crawler "Sintered" just recently, this recent "update" to that unreleased product is simply that an update. The Crawler Sintered is Now the Goat and has even more features then we originally intended for it to have. Sorry for the confusion, we felt talking about the new features would be worth the confusion. Since the Crawler Sintered system never came out, no harm no foul, just explanations.

The Crawler scene really does need some very specific adjustments or settings that a regular ESC can't give you.

We've been trying to work with a handful of Crawling specialist and they have been very helpful in expressing exactly what makes a crawler ESC perfect. Though we may not be perfect right now, we're awful close. The new "Expo Profile" of the Goat are really going to help with the very slow or careful movements over dificult obstacles. Or if you love the original Crawler, there is mode just that, Super Linear and lots of Grunt.

ya see,this is what makes Novak products great.......Employees like Charlie who take the time to come a forum like this to explain.....and Novaks commitment to the customer.....giving the best product available...even if it means switching horses mid stream to do just that....

(too bad you don't make the x box 360.......Microsoft could use a lesson in quality control,design...and customer commitment and satisfaction...)

Glad to see Novak has something cooking all the time. C'mon Charlie...bring out a Veloci-Maxx or an HVB . And while you're at it, tell the engineers to get crackin' on a 14mm sintered rotor and a 2.5 turn eh? HEHE!

Actually, the Pontiac's name was stolen from the Ferrari 250 GTO, and it is an initialism (not to be confused with an acronym) in Italian.

ahhh, the muscle car. Standing for gran turismo omologato, or nick-name GAS-TIRES-OIL., on account of your gonna need alot of all 3 when you drive it. Whatever you wanna call it, it was named after the ferrari 250 of the same badge. Appearing in 1964 as a high-end package on the tempest, it was the first muscle car, not mustang. If you look at mustang , those people try to say that it was the first. Anyway, in late '63, John DeLorean got to work, he dropped a 389 in a tempest to give it 325 hp, dual exhausts,AFB 4-barrel carb, 3.23 final drive and tons of GTO badges. Yes it got bigger, to 400 CI, but after '72, more fuel effecient cars were gaining popularity. In '74, it was discontinued. But in 04, america got to see the new GTO, true to its roots, 400 hp and rear wheel drive.
